Mother’s Day

Mother’s day is celebrated to honour mothers, motherhood and maternal bonds, the influence of mothers in an individual’s life and society as a whole. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in the months of March or May.

In Ghana, Mother’s Day is celebrated annually on the second Sunday in May. There are similar celebrations such as Father’s Day, Wives Day, Pastor’s Appreciation Day, Valentine or Lover’s Day among others. These celebrations are done to express gratitude to certain individuals who play various roles that impact the lives of people in their circles.

Anna Jarvis from the United States of America initiated the celebration of Mother’s day.

However, the extent of the celebration varies greatly in different countries. Some countries find it offensive not to honour one’s mother, while others know little about it and consider it to be media hype.

At, one of our poets and motivational writers Mr. Kwame Sarpong in his poem titled MOTHER eulogizes mothers in Ghana, Africa and the whole wide world.

Read the lyrics of his poem slowly paying attention to and soaking in the diction in the lines and stanzas.

A mother’s happiness is like a beacon, shinning her light in the path of her family

The love of a mother is like a smooth veil of love and tenderness, a likeness shared only by God, our heavenly father

As your son, I am very proud of you mother

Your prayers follows me everywhere like the light through the darkness of this world…

From a baby to a boy, from a boy to a young man and from a young man to a grown man

Your principles and discipline throughout these phases of my life has stood the test of time

All I am, all I that I will be, I owe it to you,  mother

Happy Mother’s Day!!!!
