The Vice president, Dr. Isatou Touray, on Thursday presided over the launch of Three million Euro EU funded Women Enterprise Fund for The Gambian women.
The ceremony held in Kololi was attended by Secretary to Cabinet, Cabinet Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, Senior Government Officials, Lady Councillors, Ambassadors, Regional Governors, representatives from European Union, UNDP and cross section of society.
In her address Vice president Dr.Isatou Touray described the Women Enterprise Fund project as a critical component of government poverty alleviation strategy aimed at providing and maintaining women access to finance, market, storage facilities, knowledge on climate change as well as addressing their technical barriers to trade.
The project which is earmarked to strengthen the small and medium enterprise capacity of women according to the vice President Dr. Isatou Touray has the potential to economically empower over ten thousand The Gambian women and girls including beneficiary associations and cooperative organisations across the country in the next three years.
She also enjoined commercial banks to develop gender responsive policies aimed at addressing specific financial needs of women entrepreneurs .
The chairperson of the National Women Council and the Minister of Women, Children and Social Welfare, Isatou DA. Sawaneh and Fatou Sanyang Kinteh respectively highlighted the importance of the project saying it would support women including differently individuals in adequately expanding their socioeconomic opportunities beyond the boundaries of the country while challenging them to judiciously maintain the policies of the project.
European Union International Aid and Cooperation officer Lumana Kamashi described women as key actors in community resilience building while acknowledging her office’s continues collaboration and support.
