Tension is brewing at the commercial tomatoes selling centre in Accra Brewery /CMB over the recent wrong decision taken by Queen-mother of Greater Accra Tomato Traders Association led by Madam Juliana Adjua Mensah and National President of Ghana Tomato Traders Association, Madam Lydia Afoley Anum to install Madam Charity Otumfo as an illegal queen-mother for tomato traders in the market.
The aggrieved traders vehemently condemned the installation which was illegally performed by Nii Amarh Nkpa from the Korlewonkoo, a suburb of Accra in December 2019 without the consent and knowledge of the elders of Ga Gbese and Korle Stools who are the allodia and original owners of Accra Brewery/CMB lands.
The women opposed the decision by Madam Juliana Adjua Mensa, Madam Adeai Kortei and Madam Lydia Afoley Anum to allow Nii Amarh Nkpa to install Madam Charity Otumfo as their new queen mother because they endorsed the substantive queen-mother for Accra Brewery/CMB market under the stool, Naa Ayikai Korle Dudor l (Dzalanye) to head the tomato traders at the commercial centre of Accra Brewery/CMB.
Naa Ayikai Korley Dudor I, they noted, has been legally and traditionally installed by the elders of Ga Gbese and Korle Stools led by Korle Wulomo, Nii Kwabla Ayittey III, one of the High Priests of the Ga State on November 2, 2019 to head all the item surviving traders including tomato traders at the commercial centre of Accra Brewery/CMB.
They asserted that the traditional ceremony was held at the Kokomlemle Mantse Palace to formally initiate Naa Ayikai Korley Dudor I, (the queen) into office. Under the supervision of the Korley Priestess, Naa Korley and Adabraka Mantse, Nii Tetteh Adjebeng II, Naa Ayikai Korley Dudor I was made to swear an oath of allegiance after which a traditional ceremony was held to purify her.
They mentioned that a libation was poured to invite blessings, guidance and protection for her.
After performing this traditional ceremony, Naa Dudor l, the traders stated, has been peacefully performing her roles and tasks as the overall queen of the market of Accra Brewery/ CMB, some sections along the Agbogbloshie railway, Kingsway, traders around Accra Brewery, Liberty Avenue, Farisco and its surrounding areas in Accra.
Known in her private life as Madam Grace Konu, the traders noted that the 55-year-old queen-mother has been selling tomatoes at the CMB market in Accra for the past 35 years, saying that she inherited the trade from her mother who also sold tomatoes for her whole lifetime.
Suddenly, they noted that in order to create confusion within the market, Madam Juliana Adjua Mensah, Madam Adeai Kortei and Madam Lydia Afoley Anum had allegedly consulted Nii Amarh Nkpa to perform another ceremony to illegally install Madam Charity Otumfo, the situation the traders vowed would not be allowed to work in the market.
They asserted that they had credible information that Nii Amarh Nkpa has been litigating the ownership of Accra CMB lands with Korle Wulomo, Nii Kwabla Ayittey III, making the two not be on talking terms, hence the former’s recent decision to install Madam Otumfo.
They lamented that since the installation of Madam Charity Otumfo, there has been serious confusion within the market and that for the past three weeks there has not been proper control and coordination on how tomato products were brought from other regions in the country or from Burkina Faso to Accra Brewery/ CMB to be sold to customers.
That worrying development, they noted has compelled them to petition the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and served copies to the offices of the President, Chief of Staff, Minister of Trade and Industry, National Security, Inspector General of Police, Greater Accra Regional Police Command, Railways Police Station, Ga Gbese Traditional Authority and appealed to the authorities to immediately call Madam Charity Otumfo and her cohorts to order.
They pointed out that the installation of Madam Charity Otumfo was completely against the traditions and customs of Ga Gbese and Korle Stools and that it would further dirty Shrine since her installation was not endorsed and performed by Korle Wulomo, Nii Kwabla Ayittey III and his elders.
The installation of Madam Charity, they pointed out has made Korle Wulomo, Nii Kwabla Ayittey III furious for which he has planned to take legal action against those who performed the ceremony to install her (Madam Charity Otumfo).
Instead the installation of Naa Ayikai Korley Dudor I as overall paramount Queen mother of item traders at CMB area, they stressed is in line with the customs and traditions of Ga Gbese and Korle Stools and Shrines. She is to head the tomato traders since over years the market has been the traditional place for the exchange of goods and services.
Meanwhile, the principal elders and accredited kingmakers of Ga Gbese Korle Stool had set aside Saturday January 11, 2020 to officially perform coronation and outdooring of Naa Ayikai Korle Dudor l as Queen-mother of Accra Brewery/ CMB to give her traditional legal backing to control day-to-day business commercial operational affairs in the area.
