The National Disasters Management Organization (NADMO) Director in  Offinso North Akumadan, Mr Mamoa Elijah, has issued red alert that the Tano river has been contaminated and that many fishes in it were dead.

He therefore cautions all communities along the Tano river from Techiman -Tanoso to Chira, Duayaw Nkwanta, Bechem among others to desist from drinking water from the Tano river effective Monday January 13, 2020 till further notice.

An articulator truck loaded with car batteries traveling from Accra to Tamale got involved in an accident on the Tanoso Bridge on Monday 13-01-2020. The truck tumbled and fell into the river with all its load leading to the contamination of the river. The acid in the battery thinned into the water leading to the death of several aquatic animals including fishes and crocodiles.

“We are by this urging all to carry the message to the target  communities/people along the Tano river bank to save human lives” Mr Mamoah said in a press statement copied to www.africanakua.com in Accra.

The Tano River serves as a source of water for residents in Sunyani, Abesim, Techiman, Tanoso, Chiraa, Duayaw Nkwanta and Bechem.

The river and its allied flora, aquatic and fauna diversities have over the years been preserved because of the tradition that it is home to the Taakora deity.
