Recent public announcements by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ashaiman Municipal Assemblly (ASHMA) in the Greater Accra Region, Mr Albert Bokyere Okyere, that there are works ongoing on the ultramodern Community Day Senior High School, popularly known as the E-Block project, at Ashaiman finally turned out to be true.
A visit by AFRICANAKUA.COM to site of the project on Tuesday January 28, 2020 has confirmed it.
The MCE has ostensibly made the statement to debunk the recent rumours on social media platforms that the Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) school infrastructure project undertaken by former President, John Dramani Mahama, located at Community Twenty-Two (22) at Afariwaa within the Ashaiman municipality was not abandoned by the ruling New Patrotic Party (NPP) government.
The MCE, during the recent Town Hall meeting held at Ashaiman Cluster of Schools told the gathering that his outfit was committed to complete all developmental programmes and projects including E-Block which started in Mahama’s administration, reaffirming that works are currently ongoing on the ultramodern E Block facility at Ashaiman.
Indeed, when AFRICANAKUA.COM visited the project site to ascertain the authenticity of the claims by the MCE, it was observed that the contractor had started work on the Mahama E Block project at Ashaiman which was earlier left to rot by the ruling New Patrotic Party (NPP) government.
The online news portal gathered that the government through the Assembly had changed the previous constructor working on the project and rewarded it to the Chinese construction company which was given eight months period to complete the project and hand it over to the central government to be commissioned before the 2020 showdown.
AFRICANAKUA.COM further ascertained that the contractor has fixed all the woods on the buildings of the project, but has not started roofing it.
AFRICANAKUA.COM observed during its visit to the site that there are ongoing preparation by the Chinese construction company to start the plastering works on the project.
Although most of the buildings have still been taken over by weeds, AFRICANAKUA.COM saw that some portion of the land has been hoarded by the Chinese contractor to start the construction of the workshop department since the Ashaiman Community Day Senior High School has now turned to be a Technical Senior High School.
It would be recalled that the abandoned educational facility project by the government has become a matter of serious concern to the NDC Member of Parliament (MP) for Ashaiman Constituecy, Mr. Ernest Norgbe when he indicated that the project had been abandoned, owing to the change of government in the last general elections.
According to him, the project which is about 51 per-cent complete, is yet to be fully completed to accommodate students in the Municipality.
Mr. Norgbe therefore called on government and the Minister for Education, to expedite the completion of the remaining 41 per-cent, in order to harness access to quality education of students in the Municipality.
He further revealed that the abandoned project has become a source of habitat for precarious reptiles like snakes, among others, as well as illicit squatters.
He however intimated that parts of the edifice is deteriorating, due to neglect on the part of the incumbent government.
He made these assertions known to the media, aftermath of his tour to ongoing projects within his jurisdiction, to ascertain their various levels of completion.
Touching on whether he will eject these illicit squatters within the facility, he explained that “if government has abandoned the project for dangerous reptiles to settle in, it will be better of, for humans to rather settle in the facility , therefore, no need to evacuate them.”
“If government decides to send the contractor to site to commence the continuation of the project, we will find a remedy in dealing with the issue of illegal squatters”, he added.
He was however of the view that, Ashaiman needs the completion of the abandoned Mahama E Block project, to enhance education in the Municipality.
According to the legislator, he has raised the issue of the abandonment of the E Block project in his municipality, twice on the floor of parliament for the requisite support and attention to be given to it, adding that nothing has been done in that regards.
“The Minister of Education promised me that the project will be completed some where December last year, but as at now, the Minister’s said date, has not seen the day light”, he further mentioned.
