THE EXPENSIVE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM IN AFRICA WHICH DOES NOT MEET THE NEEDS OF SOCIETY:

By: Richard Fiebor/www.africanakua.com, Ghana

Do you know that 50% of High School Students do not proceed to tertiary education or higher learning?

Do you also know that of the 50% them that do, about 43% of them do not graduate?

About 25% of University students have a child or are taking care of family.

In Ghana it takes about 4 or 5 years to graduate from university. You go through the degree course for 4 years and receive your certificate after doing your national service. Now most state universities organize the graduation ceremony soon after the exams.

What is the meaning of all these statistics?

It means that the current Educational System does not produce what it was designed to produce for the types of people that go, the number of people that go and what they need.

The current educational system does not keep up with the modern world in terms of how it makes itself available and what the charge is.

WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF ALL THESE?

  1. Modern Education is very expensive

On average, you should expect to pay between GHS 20,000 and GHS 70,000 per year for an undergraduate degree programme in Ghana. For a postgraduate degree programme, you should expect to pay between GHS 20,000 and GHS 64,000 per year.

2. Modern Education is not programmed to meet the schedules of students. In other words, the schedule for classes are inconvenient to students especially those of them that work alongside.

So you would realize that school programs take too long and they are expensive. You need to pay a fortune to earn a university degree.

WHAT ARE THE NEEDS OF SOCIETY?

Societal needs are the essential things individuals need to survive like employment, transportation, health protection and medication, safety and security, food, clothing, shelter etc.

No society truly prospers without the satisfaction of their basic needs. The needs mentioned above are basic needs which every human being needs.

WHY DOESN’T THE EDUCTIONAL SYSTEM MEET THE NEEDS OF SOCIETY?

  1. The educational system needs to evolve to the way we do everything.

Everything we do today, comes to us rather than us go to them. For example Tansportation. Uber- We do not necessarily have to go to the lorry station to enter a bus or a taxi, you just make an order on your phone with an app, Uber, Bolt or Taxify.

Besides, we watch TV prgrams on devices we want to watch them on, where we want to watch them, when we want to watch them or basically when it is convenient for us.

2. Education should be online and on demand. It should be personalized. We should do it the way we want to do it focusing on the abilities of the individual.

3. Education should be exceptionally affordable.
